Policing the Big Apple is the story of America’s largest and the world’s most celebrated law enforcement agency. The book covers the full saga of policing New York City, from 1625 in then New Amsterdam, when Johann Lampo became the first cop on the beat, through 1930s battles with the Mafia, to 1990s Zero Tolerance and the NYPD’s role in making New York one of the safest cities in the USA. As well as giving in-depth historical insight, the narrative is peppered with films, television dramas and other cultural depictions of the NYPD.
The story concludes with the NYPD’s role in combatting terrorism, its work forging peaceful community relations with minority groups, and its efforts to enhance the role of women in the force.
